Feds revive amnesty of 1986

About 10,000 people wait in immigration limbo for 22 years

The federal government plans to give legal status to certain unauthorized immigrants who applied for a 1986 amnesty program but were either unfairly excluded or never received a response to their request.

U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services officials said the period to re-apply will be open for one year beginning Feb. 1. CIS is the government agency that oversees lawful immigration into the United States.

It's not known just how many unauthorized immigrants will qualify, but the number is thought to be about 10,000.

Experts debate parameters of Hazleton immigration law

In the latest paperwork filed in Hazleton’s immigration case, attorneys debated whether a city ordinance requires residents to check the immigration status of home-repair workers like “Joe the Plumber.”

Kris Kobach, a law professor from the University of Missouri-Kansas City representing the city, said the ordinance doesn’t apply to “casual” laborers such as domestic workers or independent contractors.

Omar Jadwat, representing the American Civil Liberties Union, took the opposite position.

Men in border-patrol caps tackle a young Mexican to the ground amid jagged rocks and cacti. "You need papers to come to this country. This is not a game!" shouts one agent as he yanks the man's arms behind his back, almost tearing them from his shoulders. It looks like a scene on the U.S. border that would get human rights groups yelling. But actually, it is a game, and it takes place in the mountains of central Mexico. All of the participants are Mexicans, many of whom have paid to be part of the re-enactment of the arrest, part of a border-crossing experience for Saturday-night revelers.

Mexican troops stray across border

Seven armed Mexican soldiers aboard a military Humvee were taken into custody early Friday morning on the Arizona side of the U.S-Mexican border near Yuma in what officials called an unintentional and non-hostile incursion.

The U.S. Border Patrol received a report about 8 a.m. Friday of a Humvee heading north along the Colorado River, said Michael Lowrie, Border Patrol Yuma Sector spokesman.

Barack Obama would use his presidential power to discourage enforcement of federal immigration laws and offer blanket amnesty to 12 million illegal immigrants as part of his quiet plan to dismantle U.S. immigration policies.

In numerous speeches and interviews, Obama has repeated his pro-illegal immigrant stance, aimed squarely at filling voter rolls with hordes of newly minted Democratic voters.

Obama Says He Didn't Know Aunt's Illegal Status

Barack Obama said Saturday he was unaware that one of his relatives from Kenya was living in the United States illegally and added that believes the appropriate laws should be followed.

The Associated Press reported Friday that Obama's aunt had been instructed to leave the country four years ago by an immigration judge who rejected her request for asylum from her native Kenya.

The woman, Zeituni Onyango is living in public housing in Boston and is the half-sister of Obama's late father .

Missouri sets up 3 joint federal/state immigration task forces

SPRINGFIELD -- Since the governor's office charged state law enforcement agencies with cracking down on illegal immigrants last year, more than 300 illegals have been arrested. Now, some Missouri law enforcement officers have even more power to carry out the governor's mission.

Eighteen Highway Patrol troopers across the state are now trained to have more authority to perform duties similar to Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Their goal is to get illegal immigrants out of Missouri but some don't think the training will make much difference.

At home, the immigrant community faces a real challenge from the tension our inability to fix our immigration system has engendered.
